About Us
Michael Parlengas has been playing guitar for nearly two decades. Born a Massachusettes native, he has explored the West Coast for fifteen years. Having lived in many places including Tahoe, Tacoma, Eugene, and San Diego, he has spent the last eight years in the San Francisco Bay Area which he now calls his home. His musical journey has given him the oportunity to play with many different musicians up and down the West Coast. Having traveled the country catching many Grateful Dead shows, Michael's musical focus became improvisational psychedelic rock.
After a few years of private lessons and a struggle to find the right musical guru, Michael moved to Lake Tahoe right after high school where he connected with songwriter David Swidrak and performed with their collaboration - Save Peace. Through Swidrak's original songs Michael had the opportunity to explore playing longer solos to an array of tunes that utilized many different scales and modes. Taking it to the next level at the Oregon Country Fair, Michael was fotunate enough to play with many great West Coast musicians at fiery late night jams. While in San Diego, Michael performed at renowned Street Scene and did a run of shows with Quinno of Big Mountain fame including Winstons, Canes, Dick's Last Resort, and the Cannibal Bar. Quinno describes Parlengas's guitar playing as, "...playing reggae with Stevie Ray Vaughn!".
Once settled in Berkeley, Parlengas managed the Bison Brewery and co-hosted an open mic where he performed his own songs and often accompanied many other songwriters who appreciated his fluent lead guitar. He made a special connection with one of the regular performers Samantha Stollenwerck www.samanthamusic.com and together they formed a group called Shady Lady along with their good friend Joe Oviedo(drums), Mike Disch(bass), and Ethan Hamilton(sax). Shady Lady had a good run of shows from 1999-2001 having played many Bay Area institutions such as The Great American Music Hall, Mystic Theatre, and the Catalyst not to leave out the more intimate venues such as the Boom Boom Room, Last Day Saloon and the Red Devil Lounge. Friend of the band Wayne Derman had helped Parlengas with the opportunity to play with one of his favorite keyboard players Melvin Seals, of the JGB at the Boom Boom. Important family matters called on Michael to return to the East Coast for the first time in fifteen years. Missing his musical family on the West Coast, Michael was inspired to work on more of his own material. Returning to the West Coast before a years passing Michael meets songwriter Mike Dunn and together they collaborate on Parlengas's first bakers dozen of originals. Back together with Oviedo www.joeoviedo.com   on drums, joined by Nate Found on bass, formerly of Local Drinkers, and vocalist Michele Van Zeeland www.michelevanzeeland.com , and drummer and soundman Karl Jesse of Pathetic Honey www.pathetichoney.com , Parlengas is back on the Bay Area music scene and ready to go! Together they will perform under the name "Seraphin" and the sky is the limit!
